How to Hire the Right Business Coach: Read Before Investing!

  • Post category:Jodi

In 2017 I taught my audience how to build profitable blogs and shifted into e-course creation & sales. 2018 my focus was on copywriting, influencing, and offering free clarity calls to upsell into my high ticket 1:1 which at the time was $6,000 for four months. (Yup, it’s doubled since then). In 2019 I offered my first group coaching program and had the highest launch I’ve ever had, switching to this 1 to many business model helped me skyrocket my sales and confidence! I was generating sales through my website design packages for entrepreneurs, 1:1 coaching and my membership The Aligned VIP Tribe which has since been retired. In 2020 I went full force with the Recurring Revenue business model and majorly leveled up/restructured my old membership model. 2020 I also had the highest and most consistent sales. Thanks to this model, Six-Figure Business Booster (my month-to-month, cancel at anytime membership) has been years in the making, I’ve tracked, I’ve tweaked. I created a six-figure business! But, what’s more, important is that I’ve created six-figure entrepreneurs.

This is the type of proven track record that I look for when thinking about hiring my business coaches. To be honest, I’m a huge fan of e-courses, I learn better that way. I’m highly self-motivated and have no problem scheduling CEO time to learn. Also I’m great at decision making and filled with ideas so I can do a lot with a little information. So how does this help you? Well when looking for a coach to invest in, it’s important that you love their content. Okay, you don’t have to love it, but if you love the way they show up and teach with their free content, their paid content is going to resonate with you.

WINE! Just checking to see if you’re still reading. The other part is, it’s important to identify YOUR unique learning style. Whether you worked with me in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 or this year in 2021 one thing remains the same, the brain-based approach I take when it comes to teaching. If you don’t like woo, or you don’t believe that you are fully capable of achieving the results you seek, then I’m not the coach for you. I don’t do copy and paste strategies, I have a no BS meter when it comes to excuses and if you don’t show up for you then how can you expect the results you want to show up… for you.

As a coach myself, I’ve invested a lot of money into furthering my personal development. Not knowing how to hire the right business coach can be a scary thing. I get it, it can be frustrating to hear things like, take a leap of faith, jump, you’ll make it all back. All of these could be true but here are some things to remember before you decide to hire your next business coach.

When Do Coaches Need Coaches?

If you’re reading this and you’re currently in the coaching industry, don’t rule yourself out. A lot of coaches just starting out might think that they could never afford a coach right off the bat or might think that all the freebies and webinars out there have taught them all they need to know so they don’t have a need for a coach.

That is something I realized very quickly. If I could do it all again I would have hired a coach a lot sooner had I know how to do what I just mentioned above to assess my learning style and ideal coaching framework. I realized that while doing it on my own for so long was definitely admirable by my ego, without the right strategy, support to gain confidence in myself, and a clear blueprint I was left floundering for results. Don’t get me wrong, I did see some success because I am GREAT at getting results for myself but they weren’t sustainable and they weren’t scalable. I was using the spaghetti method, throwing strategies at the wall just hoping they would stick. And I would get frustrated as I watched those results bring me quicks wins and then slide down the wall leaving me in a mess of confusion and doubt.

A coach needs a coach when they find that their strategies aren’t bringing in consistent, scalable income. If you can find someone who has reached a certain level of success that you would like to achieve or even find someone that you vibe well with, consider learning more about them and their teaching style. Check out a few of their live trainings, consume some of their content. Get a real feel for what it would be like to work with this person.

When I started paying close attention to my favorite mentors I noticed that they often talked about their own unique coaching frameworks and this made my lil ears perk up. By consuming their content I was able to make a decision that their e-course or group coaching container may actually be a better fit for me than their high-ticket 1:1 because that’s how I like to learn. I also learned that even the best coaches could use some help streamlining their businesses and they weren’t afraid to hire help. It made me realize that my 10+ years of building a profitable blog online could have been done in a lot less time if I only hired someone to show me what they already know. 10 years could have been 1-2 sessions or 1-2 hours of e-course learning. I had missed out on a lot of opportunities and money while spending all that time doing it alone.

Business coaches will see things that need to be fixed or changed simply because they have an objective, outside of your viewpoint. I noticed that besides this outsider viewpoint it was very important that I hired someone who has a wide array of skills and expertise to avoid me having to spend additional money on hiring someone else. Someone with a wide array of skills was able to pinpoint a wide array of solutions to the problems I was experiencing.

When my clients invest in me they learn how to write better copy, build websites, construct beautiful landing pages built to convert, email sequences, automation, speaker strategies, podcasting, Instagram growth, visibility hacks, strengthen their coaching method and soooooo much more! I don’t market myself as a one-stop-shop business coach, because niches are a real thing. But I mean, that shoe fits, and I do wear a lot of fabulous hats… erm shoes.

Your Coach as Your Accountability Partner

If you already have a plan in place for creating your signature offer, utilizing a coach as an accountability partner is a smart investment. Some of us tend to work more efficiently when we know there’s a deadline but it’s also easy to ignore that deadline because we are the ones who set it. Rather than moving your deadline further and further away, use this accountability partner to keep your productivity on track. This is another reason why hiring the right coach who will hold you accountable is important. You get to tell this person how you would like to be held accountable for meeting deadlines. Inside Six-Figure Business Booster, my clients know that they have to complete their homework before they schedule their next coaching sessions and I’m very adamant about that. I take their goals seriously and so do they with my accountability methods.

When looking to hire the right business coach it’s important to remember that this person should also have the skill to break down larger tasks into smaller tasks to help you reach your version of success in your business in a way that feels good to you. I don’t force only one strategy or “my way” of doing things on anyone. You won’t see cut and paste strategies in my free content and you won’t see this in my programs. With the right type of coach, coaching you, implementation now becomes an easy task.

Your Coach as Your Guiding Light

A good business coach will have the ability to challenge your thinking and your goals in a way that promotes growth. Try to choose someone to work with who will help push you past your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid of exploring the things you fear in an effort to overcome and try something new.

Get Your Plan Started Ahead of Time

Before you invest money in a coach, try to prepare as much as possible so you can get the best out of your time together. Create a business plan with your goals, get some clarity on where it is that you would like to go. You want to be able to provide your coach with a solid starting point and be able to communicate with them what you would like to see happen next, chances are that is one of the first questions you will be asked.

If you’re looking for a way to get coaching to help you move your business forward then Six-Figure Business Booster may be the coaching program for you! It’s month to month, no contract, cancel at any time. Meaning, if after 30 days you don’t think it’s a good fit you’re free to move on and keep looking! It’s a combination of self-paced e-learning with 1:1 coaching touchpoints & accountability depending on the tier you select! Different tiers mean different investment levels based on the level of support you need for your current season of business. See the full program details here!
